This is one of three in a series about the story of Christ’s birth–all pastel in blue with words on the works.
“I was influenced by a show at the Birmingham Museum. The work of William Dunlap with all the letters and words mixed into a Civil War work made a real impression.”
What makes this work unique is that the biblical story is set in Miriam’s hometown of Birmingham and surrounding villages. It is based on the passage in Luke 2:3: “And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city.”
In this pastel of “Each to His Own City”, one can find the “cities” depicted as the villages of Birmingham including Mountain Brook, Homewood, English Village and the view from Key Circle looking toward the city of Birmingham. It shows Mary and Joseph close up on their long journey and downtown Birmingham, Alabama is in the background.
